You Won’t Believe What Our Kids Did on This Epic Taiwan Adventure!

Join us on our unforgettable Taiwan journey as we explore zoos, gondolas, and trails. See how our kids handled the unexpected with resilience and teamwork.

Hello MindFull Readers,

This year marked the third major holiday we had as a blended family, and it always makes me extra grateful for the synergy we share. I would love to write more about our trips to the USA over the past two years, but that will have to be in one of my future newsletters. Since our very recent big holiday is still fresh in my memory, I will be focusing on that in this week’s newsletter.

This year, we decided to explore Taiwan, as it has been on my bucket list for the longest time. The land of great food, majestic mountains, and, of course, amazing bubble tea! We did not have a super crazy itinerary planned, as we left some space for flexibility, which is always needed when traveling with young children.

Ruifang Station, Taiwan. We took a train from this station to get to Shi Fen.

On the third day of our Taiwan trip, we had a slight blip of craziness as we decided to conquer not only the Taipei Zoo and Maokong Gondola but also hike the Yinhe Cave Waterfall Trail, ending the day with a trip to Ningxia Night Market!

So, from early morning:

The Taipei Zoo is huge! Did you know that it’s six times bigger than the Singapore Zoo? We managed to walk through almost all of the exhibits there.

Not an alligator, not a crocodile. A caiman I think?

To early afternoon:

Then we took the Maokong Gondola all the way up to Maokong Station, where we explored one of their tea houses.

To mid-afternoon:

We then conquered the Yinhe Cave Waterfall Trail, hiking the entire 3.5 kilometers. The trail was filled with hefty climbs and descents on a non-paved paths for the majority of the hike. We made a total elevation gain of about 318 meters during this hike, and the kids just trucked along, clearing this trail within 2 hours. We had a small unfortunate incident where Big A was bitten by a leech, but other than that, both my husband and I were amazed by their resilience. Zero complaints and just amazing teamwork throughout the entire hike.

To (late) evening:

We ended up at the roadside exiting the trail and were slightly stranded because getting anywhere from there to town would take a pretty long time, as there was only one bus service running sporadically. However, we met a very kind local who offered us a ride back to the city so that we could take the MRT to our next destination. (My husband still jokingly says it’s because I “batted my eyelashes” at him, but I say it’s because he was kind and took pity on our kids.)

Thank you, nice Taiwanese gentleman!

We needed to collect a little something from Ximending and then quickly moved on to Ningxia Night Market to fill our very hungry bellies and quench our thirst after the long day we had.

By the time we reached back to our homestay and everyone was washed and tucked into bed, it was about 11 pm.

If there is a lesson I have learned from my children on this trip, it is that our children have more built-in resilience and strength than we usually acknowledge, and we do not give them enough credit for that. Let’s all take a moment or two to quietly think about the moments our children have shown their tremendous tenacity and be thankful for what wonderful little human beings they are.

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful remainder of your June Holidays. As for my international readers, I hope you’re looking forward to your upcoming Summer Holidays which will be approaching real soon!
