The words I longed to hear as a child
And why our kids need more than just “I’m proud of you.”
From my heart to yours 🩵
So many of us grew up longing to hear the words “I’m proud of you.”
As a little girl, I poured myself into dancing, drawing, painting, poetry and anything that lit up my little artistic heart. All I wanted was for my parents to see me for who I was and what I could create. To take in the things I loved as mine.
But those words never came. Not once did I hear: “I’m proud of you, and of what you do.”
I kept dancing anyway, because today I have loved ones who are proud of who I am and what I do. Through them, I learned how to be proud of myself.

Yes, even with an injured shoulder I smiled while dancing through the pain because I knew the “why” behind the pride my loved ones had for me back home.
And while those words matter, our children often need more. Instead of stopping there, add the “why”:
🩵 “I’m proud of how you kept trying, even when it was hard.”
🩵 “I’m proud of how kind you were to your friend today.”
This roots their sense of worth in effort, kindness, and resilience. Not just outcomes.
When the next opportunity arises, try naming one specific thing you’re proud of when it comes to your children or anybody else who is dear to you. You might be amazed at how their whole face lights up.
