Mindful and Positive Parenting on the News - CNA Commentary: Letting Go of the Cane and the Guilt

Shifting the Paradigm: Embrace Positive Parenting on International Spank Out Day

Dearest Mindfull Parents,

International Spank Out Day is celebrated every year on April 30th, a day dedicated to raising awareness about ending the physical punishment of children and promoting positive parenting practices worldwide.

While physical discipline has historically been a common tool, particularly in Asian cultures, I would like to encourage our parenting community to evolve and embrace alternative approaches that foster healthy discipline.

Are there more effective methods to connect with our children and guide their behavior? Absolutely! Here are five mindful alternatives to physical discipline:

  1. Offer choices: Empower your children by providing them with age-appropriate options within defined boundaries, enabling them to regain a sense of control and decision-making skills.

  2. Take a breather: Recognize the importance of self-care and emotional regulation. Sometimes, taking a momentary step back allows us to collect ourselves, regain composure, and respond calmly and rationally.

  3. Seek support: Engaging the perspective of a trusted individual, whether it's your spouse, partner, or close friend, can offer fresh insights and help diffuse challenging situations more effectively.

  4. Teach expectations: Communicate your behavioral expectations to your children clearly and consistently, taking into account different situations and using age-appropriate language.

  5. Acknowledge positive actions: Cultivate a positive environment by actively recognizing and praising your child's positive behaviors, nurturing their confidence and self-esteem.
