I Am Such A Lousy Parent And Person! Feeling Like a Failure? You’re Not Alone – Here’s My Story.

Struggling with the challenges of parenting and life? Discover how I navigated a tough start to 2024 and learn the simple steps that helped me cope. You’ve got this!

How often have you felt like you’re failing as a parent? Or even just as a person?

Hello dear reader, you’re not alone. Sending many warm hugs your way.

I have had quite a streak of feeling like a failure in the first quarter of 2024.

“Why?”

“But everything looks just fine on your Instagram?”

“You’re living the life, man!”

Do these kinds of statements sound familiar to you too?

So why was I feeling like a failure so often during the first quarter?

The year started with all of us being sick constantly, with a bout of dengue thrown in as well. There were huge challenges at school with one of our children, which escalated to the extent of being called in for an urgent meeting. Another child was going through a phase of extreme difficulty in vocalizing their emotions and acted out in a rather shocking manner. On top of all that, my husband and I were trying our hardest to balance nurturing our relationship with managing our children’s emotional wellness in a blended family.

But, boy, when I tell you the number of dead ends I felt like I was running into, it just seemed never-ending and always extra painful. There were some situations where I was at a total loss and couldn’t quite find the solution I needed. I felt like I was a total failure as a mother, spouse and as a person.

What did I do? (I promise it’s a simple method, but it takes multiple attempts and a lot of practice to succeed.)

I told myself this:

“I am also human! I am a person whose cup eventually gets too full, and I need to take a quick breather to stay sane. I need to validate my emotions first and then regulate my thinking before I take any action. I might actually want to call in some reinforcements to support me through these tough times.”

Let me break down in two steps what happened in the above monologue:

  1. I am exercising different levels of self-awareness.

  2. It’s okay for me to ask for help.

Please allow me to remind you: you are NOT a failure; you just happen to be in a challenging phase of your life. This too shall pass, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to people. There is always someone out there willing to listen and lend a hand. If you truly think there isn’t someone like that out there, I am right here offering you a shoulder to lean on when times get hard. You deserve love, healing, and support.
