How to Create a Safe Space for Your Child’s Big Feelings

Emotional safety starts with listening. Discover how a heartfelt moment with my daughter reminded me of the importance of being present.

Hello MindFull Readers,

Parenting has a way of humbling us, doesn’t it? One moment, we’re consumed by the daily grind, and the next, our child says something so deep and thoughtful it stops us in our tracks.

This week, my youngest daughter, Small A, opened up to my husband about a tender part of her heart. She shared about how it felt as if she did not have a father figure during her earliest years—a big truth from such a small soul. Small A felt like she only had Mummy and that she could only lean on me during both the good and the bad times. It wasn’t easy for her, but I felt so proud that she trusted him enough to express it.

Big feelings in children can feel overwhelming, but they’re also opportunities. When our kids feel safe and courageous enough to share, they remind us of the importance of creating a secure, open space for emotions and thoughts. It’s okay if we don’t have all the answers right away. What matters is that we listen with an open heart and let them know their feelings are always valid. This helps our children to take ownership of what they’re feeling and it guides them on their journey to learn how to cope with the actions that follow after.

How do you create a safe and courageous space for big feelings in your family? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
