Five things emotionally safe parents say to their children (and themselves)

Discover key steps to become an emotionally safe parent and support your child's emotional well-being.

Hello MindFull Readers,

As a reparenting life coach, I often ponder the qualities that define an emotionally safe parent and whether I am exercising these qualities when interacting with myself and my family.

What does an emotionally safe parent mean to you?

We often forget that our children are little humans with big feelings. They may not have the words to express their emotions as we do, and sometimes, even as adults, we struggle to keep our cool in tough moments. It's even harder for kids to regulate their emotions when they're distressed.

Here are a few ways children might act out when they're emotionally distressed:

  • Getting into physical fights

  • Lying or hiding things

  • Raising their voices

  • Stealing

  • Withdrawing from the world

  • Picking at their nails, clothes, or other items

  • Developing habits (often unhealthy) to cope with stress

Disclaimer: The behaviors mentioned aren't always direct results of emotional distress, but they can be more likely in stressful situations.

So, what does this have to do with being an emotionally safe parent?

Here are five things you can do to help your children feel emotionally safe:

  1. “I am sorry, that was my mistake.”

  2. “Your voice and thoughts are important in our family.”

  3. “It’s okay to make mistakes; I do too!”

  4. “Your feelings matter to me.”

  5. “You see things differently from me, and that’s perfectly fine.”

I'd love to dive deeper into emotionally safe parenting, but it's been a hectic week for our family. Our oldest daughter just turned nine today, and our youngest had a tough bout of food poisoning yesterday. Time has been scarce, as I'm sure many of you parents can relate!
